Originally built in 1920, this 1-1/2 story bungalow in Arlington's Clarendon neighborhood had a wonderful lot but poorly laid out, dark, and chopped up interiors.  The owners hired FitzHarris Designs to design a whole house renovation, side addition, and new rear screen porch.  One of the key design moves to the renovation was relocating and stacking the stairs.  A new side entry at grade allows the family of five to enter directly into a mudroom to contain all their "stuff" and then onto the mid level of the switch back stair.  The main entry now flows into a proper proportion living room and study.  The rear kitchen is now open to a Great Room with dining space and family room that open onto a wonderful screen porch.  With a beautiful new master suite, compartmentalized bathroom upstairs, and large lower level recreation room, the family members all have their individual needs served.  Sustainable and healthy home concepts bring the historic home into the 21st century.  Improvements include center stair light well and ventilation, spray foam insulation, zoned radiators, hot water recirculating pump, and low flow plumbing fixtures, VOC free finishes, etc.  The project was designed and certified under the Green Home Choice program for sustainability.
